First pregnancy ultrasound: when to have it and why

By Dr Oussama Rachid ·

The first ultrasound confirms the pregnancy, dates it and checks that it is developing in the right place. It is most often done in the first trimester, by the endovaginal or abdominal route depending on the stage and the situation. This article explains what it offers and how to prepare. It is informational: your schedule is set with your doctor.

First pregnancy ultrasound: when to have it and why

When to have it

Around 7 to 9 weeks of amenorrhoea, or earlier if an early check is useful (pain, bleeding, pregnancy after treatment, history). The doctor chooses the right time for your situation.

What it shows

That the pregnancy is in the uterus, the number of embryos, the heartbeat from a certain stage, and an estimate of the due date.

Endovaginal or abdominal?

Very early in pregnancy the endovaginal route gives sharper images. Later, the abdominal route is often enough. The choice is made with you: see the Endovaginal ultrasound page.

How to prepare

Bring your documents and note the date of your last period. For an endovaginal scan it is usually better to empty your bladder; for an abdominal scan the doctor tells you whether the bladder should be full.

Bleeding or pain

Do not wait for your appointment: call the clinic or the emergency number. If you cannot wait, go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently asked questions

How many ultrasounds during pregnancy?

Is ultrasound harmful to the baby?

Used appropriately by a professional, ultrasound is considered safe.

Can the baby's sex be known at the first ultrasound?

Usually not: identification is more reliable later in pregnancy.
