Gynaecological examination charter: what you can expect

A gynaecological examination is an intimate moment. This charter explains how it is carried out at the clinic and reminds you of your rights: to be informed, to give or refuse your consent, and to ask for a pause or to stop the examination at any time. It is informational and does not replace the discussion with the doctor.

Gynaecological examination charter: what you can expect

Before the examination: we explain

The doctor starts by talking with you, dressed: reason for the visit, history, questions. He explains the proposed examination, why it is useful and how it goes. An examination is never automatic: it is offered when it gives useful information.

Your consent is asked

The examination takes place only with your agreement. You may refuse it, postpone it or limit it. Just say so: the doctor will discuss it with you.

Privacy and modesty

You undress out of sight and stay covered as much as possible during the examination. You may come accompanied and ask for a person of your choice to be present.

During the examination, step by step

The doctor announces each step before doing it, as gently as possible. Tell us about any discomfort or pain: the examination can be paused or stopped at any time at your request.

Particular situations

Tell us if you have never had sexual intercourse, if you are pregnant, if you have pain, a difficult history or an allergy (to latex, for example). The examination is then adapted and other approaches, such as an abdominal ultrasound, can be offered when possible.

Clean, protected equipment

Equipment is single-use or cleaned and disinfected according to the clinic's hygiene rules, and the doctor washes his hands before each patient.

After the examination: explanations

The doctor explains what he found, answers your questions and tells you what to do next. A report is given to you.

What we do not do

No intimate examination without need or without your agreement; no photo or video without your written consent; no comment on your body or personal situation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a gynaecological examination painful?

It should not be. It may cause brief discomfort. Tell the doctor at any time: he adapts his movements or stops the examination.

Can I consult during my period?

Yes for most consultations. For a smear test it is often better to postpone: ask the clinic for advice.

I have never had intercourse: is an examination possible?

It is adapted to your situation: the doctor explains the options and does not perform an internal examination without need and without your agreement.

Can I bring my mother, sister or husband?

Yes. You may come accompanied and ask for a person of your choice to be present during the examination.
